The most basic use of computer systems is creating a file. Because most systems and applications are standardized it makes it a lot easier to update and create files.
- Some times, (for example: from the Desktop), you can right-click and get a list of file types you can create.
- Often, you will be in an application or window. From there you can click on File > New...(choose the type of file to create).
- Sometimes you will be prompted to name the file, at that point you will (choose a location to save the file), type a name of the file and click save.
- If you were not prompted to save the file. Click File > Save(choose a location to save the file), name the file whatever you would like to call it, then click save.

Data Recovery: Arrrgggghhhh!!! I LOST all of my files! For a lot of us it is imperative that we have back ups of our files. This used to be true for commercial companies mostly. However, hard drive size (which allows for more storage space) has increased exponentially from those of yesteryear. Today, you have more data (for example: pictures, movies, music, software, documents and more) stored on your home computer which means you have more to lose.
Oh, no! My hard drive crashed!!!
So how do you protect yourself and your computer from loss of data?
Here are some important things to do when you suspect a failing hard drive.
- Shut Down the computer if you hear clicking, grinding or swirling sounds
- if possible, immediately back up everything thing on the drive you have access to.
- After the initial recovery attempt; do not power on the drive if it is at all avoidable.
- Don't attempt to recover data on a drive that has extensive damage
Remember that most times data can be recovered, even when all hope seems lost
-
Stl MTech can help with data recovery
- failure to do so could result in permanent loss of data.
Good Practices
- Adopt a means of redundantly backing up data that is critical
- Do NOT upgrade without FIRST backing up all files
- Uninterruptible power supply will help prevent loss of data in the event of electrical power surges
- Make sure that your system is located in a cool location. Excessive heat can severely shorten the life of a drive.
- There are numerous off-site data storage companies available. Investing in one early can help prevent disastrous situations.
- Always make sure that your back ups are of the most current changes to critical files (for example: applications, forms, documents, music, movies, pictures, databases, etc.)

- Ever want to create a link to a file or application? There are several ways to do it. I will outline the simplest way here.
- Right-click and Drag(for example: drag to the Desktop) on the file or application and choose "Create Shortcuts Here".
- Once you have clicked "Create Shortcuts Here", an icon will appear on, in this example, the desktop. You now can click that link to access the file or application.

- Throughout the use of your computer, files are constantly moved, deleted, created, etc. This activity sometimes causes fragments of files to be stored in one area of the hard drive and other fragments of the same files to be stored on other parts of the hard drive, opposed to being one whole and continuous file. This type of fragmenting makes the computer less efficient at retrieving data/files. Here we will outline how to defragment the drive so that all of a file's content are located on the drive together as a single continuous file.
- Open My Computer and right-click the drive you want to defragment.
- Click Properties
- Click Tools
- Click "Defragment Now..,"
- Click "Defragment"
